ジャパンラグビーリーグワン、ここまで全勝で首位を走る埼玉パナソニックワイルドナイツは、ホスト熊谷で浦安D-rocksと対戦。

前節から6人のメンバーを入れ替えたがその強さは変わらなかった。ここまで未勝利の浦安に対して、前半4つのトライを決めて32－5と圧倒。

後半もヴィンス・アソのトライで39－5として試合を早々に決めた。浦安は後半3トライを返すも力負け、初勝利はならなかった。この試合でリーグワン・デビューを果たした、FBトム・パートンはイングランド・サラセンズから今季加入。80分フル出場を果たした。

――リーグワンデビューをした今の心境は？


ワイルドナイツの一員として、素晴らしい一ヶ月を過ごすことができた。チームメイトたちと知り合っていく過程を、一分一秒たりとも無駄にすることなく、すべてを大事にすることができた。


――ワイルドナイツに来た理由は？


たくさんある。自分にとって、このような機会を得られたことは非常にエキサイティングなことであり、自分とは異なるスタイルのラグビーをプレーすることで自分自身を試すチャンスだし、こんな名門クラブからオファーをもらったら断るわけにはいかなかった。自分にとって当然の選択だった。

――イングランド時代のチームメイトとは話した？


日本に来る時に、何人かと話したよ。ロンドン・アイリッシュとサラセンズで一緒にプレーしたSHニック・フィップス（グリーンロケッツ東葛）やSOマヌ・ヴニポラ（三重ホンダヒート）たちとね。クボタにいるFLオリー・ストーンハムとも話した。他にもSOジェームズ・グレイソン（三菱重工相模原ダイナボアーズ）とも話した。彼らのラグビーに対する考えを聞くことで、今シーズンの最高のスタートと最高の準備ができると思った。

――実際に試合をしてみて、どうだった？


良かったよ。 とても速くて、ボールをたくさん使ってプレーする時間も長かった。 スタイルはかなり違ったけど、自分のプレーやチームに貢献できることにはとても合っていると思う。 そして何よりも重要なのは、僕らは勝たなきゃいけないし、早くも来週が待ち遠しい。

――いつこちらに来たのですか？


12月28日に到着したので、ちょうど1か月と少しになる。文化、人々、食べ物など、すべてが気に入っている。そして何よりも、パナソニックが僕をとてもよく歓迎してくれた。そして、リーグワンデビューの機会をすぐに与えてくれたことは、本当に光栄だった。


――こちらでの生活を楽しんでいる？


熊谷には素晴らしいレストランがあってそこのステーキや焼きそば、唐揚げが最高だ。先日のオフは富士山に行ったんだ。現地でとてもクールな場所に泊まったんだ。それから東京に行って、日本でプレーしている数人の仲間と会った。うん、できる限り日本の文化にどっぷり浸かって見ようと思っている。


――ワイルドナイツで仲良くしている選手は？


一番多く一緒に夕食を食べに行ったのは、LOルード・デヤハーだ。彼は僕を食事に連れて行ってくれたり、何度かコーヒーを飲んだりした。それから、ディラン・ライリーとも隣人なんだ。とても親切で大晦日と元旦のディナーに招待してくれた。彼は、文化やチームメイトについて教えてくれたり、どこに行けばいいか、どこで食べ物を買えばいいかなど、ちょっとしたアドバイスをくれたりして、とても助けてくれた。

――ワイルドナイツ以外で仲良しは誰？


親友がいるんだ。FLジョシュア・バシャムだね。彼は清水建設江東ブルー・シャークスでプレーしている。13歳の頃から彼とは学校が一緒だったから、先週彼に会えて、とても嬉しかった。そして、日本のことを少し話したんだ。すごくクールだったよ。


――熊谷ラグビー場の雰囲気はどう？


とてもいいよ。初めての試合で経験したけど、ファンのエネルギーが大好きだ。このブロックではホームゲームが数試合あるから、もっともっと観客が来たくなるようなパフォーマンスを見せたいね。


――みんなが初トライを期待しているけど。


今日も惜しいところはあったけどね。また次の機会に。

Q. How do you feel now that you've made your debut in the League One?


I've had a wonderful month as a member of the Wild Knights. I've made the most of every minute of the process of getting to know my teammates, and I've made the most of everything.


Q. Why did you come to the Wild Knights?


There are many reasons. For me, it was an exciting opportunity to play a different style of rugby and I couldn't turn down an offer from such a prestigious club. It was the obvious choice for me.

Q. Did you talk to any of your England teammates?


I spoke to some of my teammates from England when I came to Japan. I spoke to Nick Phipps (Green Rockets Tokatsu), who played with me at London Irish and Saracens, and Manu Vunipola (Mie Honda Heat). I also spoke to Ollie Stoneham (Kubota), who plays FL for them, and James Grayson (Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Sagamihara Dynaboars), who plays SO. I thought that by listening to their thoughts on rugby, I would be able to get the best start and the best preparation for this season.


Q. How was it actually playing in the game?


It was good. It was very fast, and there was a lot of time to play with the ball. The style was quite different, but I think it suits my play and what I can contribute to the team. And most importantly, we have to win, and I can't wait until next week.

Q. When did you arrive in Japan?


I arrived on December 28th, so it's been just over a month. I like everything about it - the culture, the people, the food. And most of all, Panasonic have made me feel very welcome. And it was a real honor to be given the chance to make my League One debut so soon.


Q. Are you enjoying life here?


There are some great restaurants in Kumagaya, and the steak, yakisoba and fried chicken there are all fantastic. The other day I went to Mt. Fuji on my day off. I stayed at a really cool place here. Then I went to Tokyo and met up with some of my friends who are playing in Japan. Yeah, I'm trying to immerse myself in Japanese culture as much as I can.

Q. Which players do you get on well with at the Wild Knights?


The player I've had dinner with the most is LO Rudo Deyaer. He's taken me out to eat and we've had coffee a few times. I'm also neighbors with Dylan Riley. He's been very kind and invited me to dinner on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day. He's been very helpful, teaching me about the culture and teammates, and giving me little tips on where to go and where to buy food.


Q. Who are your good friends outside of the Wild Knights?


I have a good friend. FL Joshua Basham. He plays for Shimizu Koto Blue Sharks. I was really happy to see him last week because we went to school together since we were 13. We talked a little bit about Japan. It was really cool.

Q. How is the atmosphere at Kumagaya Rugby Ground?


It's really good. I experienced it for the first time at the match, but I love the energy of the fans. There are a few home games in this block, so I want to put on a performance that will make the audience want to come back for more.


Q. Everyone is hoping for your first try.
